Civil registration is the government system that records vital events which, as per the UN Statistics Division, are live births, stillbirths, deaths, marriages, divorces, annulments, judicial separations, adoptions, legitimations, and recognitions.

In an ideal civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system, a vital event goes through ten steps to transform from an event into a vital statistic.

 “Vital statistics constitute the collection of statistics on vital events in a lifetime of a person as well as relevant characteristics of the events themselves and of the person and persons concerned.”

The registration of a vital event is important for individuals and families, administrative purposes, and for public health purposes. It is critical for governments to establish functional and efficient systems to support the registration of all vital events for all, to leave no one behind.
